T-Birds Get Road Win at NMMI, 65-61
Roswell, NM – The second round of WJCAC Conference play started out in similar fashion to the first round, with the NMJC Thunderbirds defeating NMMI. In the third meeting between the two teams this season, New Mexico Junior College held off a furious rally in the final two minutes to capture their first road win of the conference schedule, 65-61.
The Thunderbirds led the Broncos 58-47 with just over two minutes to play. A rash of turnovers and clutch shooting by the Broncos brought the score to 63-61 with just 8 seconds to play. NMJC’s David Mecanovic hit two free throws to stretch the T-Birds lead out to four points, and a desperation 3pt shot at the buzzer bounced off the rim for the Broncos.
NMJC was led in scoring by sophomore guard Derick Pullen, who totaled 11 points and 5 rebounds. Freshman B.J. Beasley scored 10 points on 4/4 shooting, including 2/2 from the free throw line. The T-Birds shot 45% from the field, including 16/22 from the free throw line.
The Thunderbirds will return home for the first time in 14 days when they host NJCAA #6 Howard College at 7:45pm.
