3/2/2010 10:27:21 AM – The New Mexico Junior College Women’s Basketball team will square off against Collin County College in the first round of the NJCAA Region 5 Championship.  The Lady Thunderbirds earned their first playoff berth in almost ten years with a third place finish in the conference.  The regional tournament will be held at Lubbock Christian University in Lubbock, TX.  The T-Birds’ firstround game is on Friday, March 5th at Noon.  A win will put them in the semifinal game Saturday at 7:00PM. 2/22/2010 9:04:30 AM – For the first time in almost 10 years, the women's basketball team has secured a spot in the Regional Post Season Tournament.  The spot was secured with the 74-68 win over Odessa College on February 18th.  Samantha O'Shields led all scorers with 20 points with four 3pt shots.  The post season berth comes with two games left on the regular season schedule.  If the T-Birds are able to win both, they can finish as high as the second seed.  The regional tournament begins March 5th in Lubbock, TX.

1/26/2010 11:20:02 AM – With the first Top 15 win in over 3 years, the Lady T-Birds get back on track in league play.  The 66-60 win over #14 Odessa College marks the highest ranked win for Coach Drew Sanders and the Lady T-Birds since he arrived in Hobbs, NM.  From start to finish the game proved to be a defensive battle.  Odessa held the Ladies to just 10 points twelve minutes into the first half, while only scoring 19.  NMJC was able to cut the lead to four with a halftime score of 26-30.  Odessa came out of the locker room on an offensive rally that extended their lead to 10 points.  The Lady T-Birds quickly cut into the lead to make the game close to the end.  Jordan McGee led all scorers with 20 points. Hanka Musa was able to score 13 while grabbing 7 rebounds.  The win gives NMJC a 2-2 record in league play, and positioning them in a 3-way tie for third place.  The Lady T-Birds continue the season on the road playing at Frank Phillips College on January 28, 2010.

1/12/2010 10:22:32 AM – After losing the first game of the new year to Casper College, the Lady T-Birds have won two straight in 2010.  The first win came against Cisco College, a team that beat the ladies earlier in the season.  The most recent win was against one time conference rival Clarendon College.  NMJC began the game strong while slowly building a lead.  The T-Birds finished the half with a 10 point lead while holding the high powered Clarendon offense to just 24 points.  The second half was highlighted by the offense of the Thunderbirds.  They quickly extended their lead which eventually swelled to 26 points.  The game finished with the score of 80-61.  Jordan McGee led NMJC in scoring with her best output of the season, 19 points.  Brianna Edmond had 15 and Trayvia hart also scored in double figures with 13 points.  NMJC opens conference play this Thursday against Howard College.

12/7/2009 11:01:24 AM – The women's basketball team finished the 2009 calendar year with a 106-35 win over Wayland Baptist's JV squad. Dominique Crawford led all scorers with 18 points. Jordan McGee and Hanka Musa also scored in double figures. The Lady Thunderbirds also had its best turnover ratio of the season, forcing WBU JV into 31 turnovers while only committing 12. The game marks the end of competitions until January 1, 2010. Despite having one of the toughest schedules in the region, along with 11 freshmen, and a run of bad injuries, the ladies were able to compile an overall record of 7-7 for the first half of the season. NMJC's next games will be at the T-Bird shootout on January 1 and 2 in the Caster Activity Center.

11/17/2009 9:18:32 AM – The women's basketball team participated in the Tyler Classic November 12-14.  NMJC was short handed throughout the tournament due to injuries.  Trayvia Hart sprained her ankle the first day of the classic, and Hanka Musa had been out with an ankle injury for over a week.  The ladies began the tournament with a loss to the host team Tyler Junior College.  The T-Birds started strong in the first half thanks to Samantha O’Shield’s 13 points.  After leading the way throughout the first half, NMJC went into the locker room down 35-39.  Tyler came out in the second half with a strong effort led by Cemonay Newell who finished the game leading all scorers with 18.  After making small runs throughout the second half, NMJC eventually fell to Tyler 70-80.

11/9/2009 10:06:07 AM – The Lady T-Birds are off to a 3-2 start this season.  The most recent action was on the road in the Seward County Classic.  The ladies opened the classic with a 67-56 win over Garden City.  Samantha O’Shields led the T-birds in scoring again with 17 points.  Hanka Musa and Trayvia Hart also chipped in double digit scoring.  The Lady T-Birds followed the performance with a 72-47 loss to the host team Seward County.  Playing in their fifth game of the week, the ladies began the game flat and never recovered.  Hanka Musa was one of only a few bright spots scoring 13 points and 7 rebounds.  The women’s team has yet another quick turnaround.  They will play three games this week in the Tyler Classic this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

11/3/2009 2:20:27 PM – The Lady Thunderbirds won 70-58 over Cochise College Monday night in the second game of the Thunderbird Classic.  With the win, NMJC reaches an overall record of 2-0.  NMJC put together a solid defensive outing allowing Cochise only 58 points while causing 34 turnovers.  NMJC held the halftime lead 25-38.  It was eventually extended to 20 points before Cochise went on a run to cut it to 12.  The T-Birds were led again by Brianna Edmonds with sixteen points and ten rebounds.  Cochise was led in scoring by Jasmine Arias and Nicole Ramos.  The Lady T-Birds will return to action at home Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. against Fort Bliss.  The game marks the end of the 2009 Thunderbird Classic.

11/2/2009 7:21:39 AM – The NMJC Women’s Basketball team won 95-39 Sunday night over Southwest Texas College in the opening game of the Thunderbird Classic.  The win marks the first game of the season, making the T-Birds 1-0 overall.  The Lady Thunderbirds started the game shooting well from the outside.  Samantha O’Shields hit three shots from beyond the 3 point line in the first half to go along with Chamiya Reaves’ triple to start the game.  The lady T-Birds raced to a 47-17 half-time lead and never looked back.  The women’s team was very balanced in scoring, but was led by Brianna Edmonds with 16 points and Samantha O’Shields with 12.  Fifteen of the sixteen suited T-Birds scored during the contest.

10/28/2009 4:21:57 PM – The Women’s Basketball Team will have its season opener this Sunday evening at 5:00 p.m. in the Caster Activity Center as part of the Thunderbird Classic. The Lady Thunderbirds will be playing Southwest Texas from Uvalde, TX. The Lady T-Birds will also play Monday and Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.  The women’s program is coming off a successful 2008-09 campaign winning 17 games.  That is over four times the wins from the previous season.  Loaded with young freshman talent, and experienced returners, the Lady T-Birds are looking to make a run at the regional tournament in 2010.
